Exhibition
As part of the upcoming Spaces of History / Histories of Space conference, the Global Spatial Histories Working Group invites designers and design students to submit flyer-sized posters that address one of the following two themes: (1) Histories of the Future or (2) Design as Inquiry. The goal of this exhibition is to provide a venue to explore the relationship between historical thinking and the making of the built environment. Accepted posters will be presented in an exhibition at the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley and will be included in a panel discussion during the conference.

Exhibition tracks:
1. Histories of the Future: This track focuses on the ways in which professional designers and everyday builders have envisioned the future. Submissions for this track should address specific projects (built or unbuilt) and the historical contexts that gave shape to their ideological and aesthetic dimensions. In particular, we'd like posters to illuminate projects that deliberately sought to break from the past or those that attempted to establish continuities with history. Posters may also deal with contemporary issues, such as climate change and ecological crisis.

2. Design as Inquiry: This track focuses on the use of design as a means of historical inquiry. Submissions for this track should grapple with the idea that creative processes, design media and materials can be used as vehicles for making the past visible (or invisible). In particular, we'd like posters to show innovative applications of representational technologies or explore experimental art projects and site installations that have sought to recreate past experiences and impart historical knowledge.

Exhibition submission requirements:

Deadline: 17 March 2010

In the spirit of propagating revolutionary thought, all "posters" should be formatted in the size of a flyer, 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches high, with clear and reproducible text and graphics. Submissions should indicate the author's name(s) without institutional or company affiliations. A brief description, contact information, and credits (in case of a collaborative project) should be included in the email. All posters should be saved as a PDF file and submitted to Clare Robinson at clare@berkeley.edu  by March 17, 2010. Accepted participants will be notified by March 31, 2010. Final submissions are due April 21, 2010.

Please note that posters will be displayed in a gallery in a printed format and also projected on a display screen during the conference.
